  2. Northumbrian historian Bede, when Caedmon was
  3. a cowherd at the Christian monastery of
  4. Whitby, he was commanded to sing by a
  5. stranger in a dream, and on waking produced a
  6. hymn on the Creation. The original poem is
  7. preserved in some manuscripts. Caedmon became
  8. a monk and may have composed other religious
  9. poems.
